You can't assume that they've already read everything. If they've been gone, they'll be behind. If they're behind, they'll be trying to catch up. I still don't know why people try so hard to catch up when they haven't been around for so long, but it means they'll almost always be behind. So if they need to know what's going on right now, tell them. Tell them up front, but cheerfully, and sound excited. (Still not sure how to do this lightly and without adding pressure.)
It doesn't help when they stretch themselves in twenty directions, but that's just something you'll have to get used to if you want to be happy and active.
Make concrete plans with them. Work in advance if possible.
