the lower jaw is spring-loaded, so that the Mari’s operator can snap it at passersby.

The tradition involves the arrival of the horse and its party at the door of the house or a pub, where they sing several introductory verses. Then there ensues a battle of wits (known as the pwnco) in which the people inside the door and the Mari party outside exchange challenges and insults in rhyme. At the end of the discourse, which can be as long as the creativity of the two parties lasts out, the Mari Lwyd enters with another song.

Beautiful song, though I've never seen the origin described as such and so I think that bit's nonsense for a number of reasons. Likely someone just looked around for a possible origin and, not finding an obvious one and being antagonistic toward Christianity, made up a connection.

This usually amounted to heavy leg-pulling in which the contestants mocked each other's singing, drunkenness, etc.

So far I think the rough outline is: There's a knock on the door to the Great Hall. Selwyns march into the Great Hall singing, with the Mari. Is Cerys already there or is she in the group? Either way Huw would be leading the Mari and trying to keep her under control as she passes by people, snapping at them. (Taryn is absolutely inside the Mari.) As the procession reaches a place at the front where everyone can see it, they stop and begin the pwnco. (Calli's writing them, in English so everyone can understand it.) After a few verses of back and forth they "let the Mari in" and...

is that when she runs wild or does she just sing? sings and then runs wild after getting a little too excited! does the mari sing or just everyone else? EYES ARE ABSOLUTELY GLOWING GREEN

In any case there's got to be some running wild and then they get her back in order for the leaving song. At that point I don't know if they'd bow or just march back out, singing. Probably the latter.
